It seems incredible that 25 years have passed since Duncan wrote 'Always Argyll' with the able assistance of Jimmy Jamieson of Tighnabruaich, home also of the late Celly Paterson, whose collaboration with Duncan resulted in the memorable and much loved 'Home of the Kyles'.

Collaboration is an essential feature today of the well-made and in this respect Mr McCrone is well-served by his long term friend and co-writer Cy Jack along with the young idea - in the shape of Chris Stout and Catriona Mackay, both wonderful players who add a sparkling Northern sheen to a succession of fine tracks.

Duncan (and Cy)'s creative muse has been hard at work in the provision of a clutch of new songs ranging far and wide, employing contrasting arrangements and sourced from a diverse range of experiences. Needless to say, several of those experiences involve the joys of transportation at high speed; witness the Zephyr Zodiac in the title track and Donald Campbell's 'Bluebird' in the closing song. Not that the Z.Z. ever did 300mph!

His new setting of 'Just a Glasgow Boy' proves what a good song it is, while the full Jacobite context of 'Loch Lomond' makes plain what has often been guesswork down through the years!

All you need to know about this album is that these songs span a goodly number of fertile years and that their selection suggests a very broad brush indeed. We are all for that.

But there is something, too, for those of us who prefer life in the slow lane! The good thing is that you can switch lanes as you change tracks!
