REVIEW: "The Best Ever Scottish Compilation provides a great
overview of a broad spectrum of Scottish traditional music, in a two-CD set
from REL. There is loads of great music on this collection, ranging from young
and older players in a wide variety of styles, and including piping, fiddling
accordion playing and songs, in 35 tracks. The album includes many of the old
standards that you would expect, including "Amazing Grace," "My Love is Like a
Red, Red Rose," and "Wild Mountain Thyme," as well as popular jigs, reels and
waltzes, such as "The Boston Two Step." There are tales of betrayal in "The
Massacre of Glencoe" sung by John McDermott and stirring numbers from massed
bands like the Scottish Fiddle Orchestra and the Bucclleuch and Queensberry
Caledonia Pipe Band. The artists include The Porridge Men, harpist Lori
Pappajohn, Enter the Haggis, Jimmi Shand, The Tartan Lads, Celtic Spirit,
Freeland Barbour, Isla St. Clair, The Clydesiders, and the Kingdom Folk Band. I
particularly enjoyed Lori Pappajohn's "Then Shall I Love Thee," The
Clydesider's "The Surf and the Silver Fishes," "Enter" by Enter the Haggis, and
the "Air and Shetland Reels" contributed by Freeland Barbour. As with many
compilations, this is a way of checking out individual artists and hearing new
groups without committing to an entire CD. This collection represents a good
introduction to a broad variety of music in the Scottish tradition."

WHAT THE
PRESS SAY....
"...
there is some excellent material present, ranging from the neo-ceilidh and
Shooglenifty-flavoured Porridge Men (just add salt) to classy balladeer John
McDermott and solidly entertaining, robustly melodic The Clydesiders. Enter the
Haggis offer full-blown bagpipe-led Celtic rock, there's an appearance from
much respected folk musician Freeland Barbour, and The Kingdom Folk Band
produce country-inspired acoustic folk which manages to hit the right spot. Add
to the mixture a couple of live recordings from Jimmy Shand and you've a
surprisingly rich and varied collection which showcases well the wide range of
the REL label, and of contemporary Scottish 'folk' music." Sean McGhee - Rock 'n' Reel
"This is going to be big among tartan-clad
exiles anywhere on the planet." Alistair MacLean - The
